Urgent Call for Help!
Urgent Call for Help!
Late last Friday night (25.7.) ten neglected and maltreated equines arrived at ARCH that had been confiscated from an owner who, allegedly, was a hoarder with mental illness. Only four of the equines appear to have microchips and we received no paperwork for any of them.
We are now sheltering two large mares, a mare with a filly foal, two small pony stallions, a donkey stallion, an elderly gelding, and two female donkeys (one of which looks pregnant). They all need urgent care. In addition to the extra hay and hard feed we will have to budget for, there will be extensive veterinary care costs, vaccinations, dentistry and all the animals need a farrier to sort out their neglected hooves.
This is going to put a huge strain on our finances as well as causing substantial additional work for our horse carers Aly and Elisabeth and our volunteer team. We take neglected and abused equines from SEPRONA but receive no costs from the authorities – we even have to pay for the transport in rescues such as this one. It seems that we have to keep appealing to our friends and supporters and the general public in order to keep going. To help us, please donate via our Donorbox: http://www.tinyurl.com/ARCH-Donorbox/ or go to our donations page:https://www.horserescuespain.org/donations/ for other options.
Everything we receive will go towards making life better for these poor animals.
What We Do
RESCUING HORSES, PONIES & DONKEYS
We are a registered charity and work closely with Seprona (environmental law enforcement) and the local police, as we have no powers to confiscate.

REHABILITATION & REHOMING
Once our horses and donkeys are fully rehabilitated, our main aim is to find them a forever home.
To see our available equines and complete an online adoption form, click on ‘Adopt’.
To view some of our favourite ‘before and after’ success stories, view the e-book.
VOLUNTARY SUPPORT
Our charity is staffed by volunteers and we depend on fundraising activities and donations to carry on our work. Your support will mean a great deal.
Featured Equines
Valentina (formerly "Baby")
Bay filly
Still growing
Born 2020
This filly was abandoned in Granada province together with her mom and another mare when their owner died. The local OCA office asked us to take them in. She is about 2 years old and still growing.
Emcee
Grey gelding
150cm
Born 2021
Confiscated from Huelva with others, starving and neglected.
He has had little sympathetic handling, so needs to learn to trust humans..
Flycka
Grey Mare
+-142cm
Born 2016
Flycka is the perfect project for a very experied horse person due to the fact that she has spent nearly her entire life without any handling. Once she trusts someone, she connects easily, but is wary at first.
Flycka is not dominant in a herd environment, an easy keeper and still needs to be introduced to plenty of new things.
Only suitable for a lightweight person. Has only had basic handling and goundwork.
Esperanza
Donkey jenny
Born 2009
Height 120 cm
Esperanza was rescued by ARCH on the day of our annual Spring Festival in 2025. She had been abandoned near Coín.
She is a lovely and very friendly donkey and gets along with everyone.
Pirata
Grey gelding
160cm
Born +- 2000
Rescued 13.07.2022 from the dry riverbed near Pizarra. Found together with a deceased horse.
Pirata suffered from a severe eye infection and a castration gone wrong (now cured). He is suitable for light hacking.
Senador
Bay Gelding
162cm
Born 2005
Senador was rescued from a tiny stable, where his foot had become infected, and he wasn’t being fed or properly cared for.
He recovered enough to work as a police horse for a while, but now retired from service and has returned to ARCH. He has arthritis which is currently being controlled with medication.
